I constantly hear people say “I can never find things at D.I., Goodwill or Savers” or “the thrift stores near my house are always picked over”. So here is some of my thoughts in regards to those comments.
First……….thrift shopping is NOT EASY! You are NOT walking into a beautiful store with aesthetically pleasing smells and store displays. In fact sometimes the smells are so unpleasing it blocks my creative juices, but don’t let that intimidate. There are not racks and racks of beautiful clothes or decorations, but rather racks and racks of old, ugly clothes and ugly decorations with scattered gems. Yes, meaning you have to dig and rummage through crap! But it is so worth it especially when you find that amazing item!!
Second piece of business. Thrifting takes T I M E . I usually spend on average an hour if not longer in thrift stores. It is a process of searching, rummaging, and envisioning, which are all equally time consuming. Once you are successfully in your rummaging it is a new process of deciding how to wear or use what you have found. Is it really that great? Will it work? Does it fit? Does it need alterations? Does it have potential?
Potential…..that decision is refined. It takes practice. Over the years I have improved significantly. I used to buy lots and lots of crap that was simply just crap. But now I am able to pick out the winners and leave the losers. Something that has helped is INSPIRATION. Find sites that inspire you for fashion or home decoration and envision those things when thrifting. I love using pinterest, Urban Outfitters, and Anthropologie. This really works too!! I have several thrifted clothing items I wear and when I do I get asked…….is that from Urban or is that from Anthro? Find INSPIRATION and know what you W A N T.
My best advice is to go out and get started. Practice makes perfect. You will be pleased, your wallet will be pleased and you get MORE for your buck. And for me thrifting is not just about saving money it is a hobby and passion of mine. I love it. It makes me happy. And yes this is a picture from my most recent thrift shopping experience.

As a thrifter, when is it that I spend a little extra cash? PANTS, PANTS, and PANTS. Quality pants have always been hard for me to find as a thrifter. I mean…… don’t get me wrong I have loads of thrifted pants, but I do always appreciate spending a little extra cash for quality pants. I have had my eye on these boyfriend jeans from Anthro, but in my desperate attempts to save money I kept waiting and waiting to come across some boyfriend jeans as comfortable, flattering and quality but for ten dollars and not one hundred dollars. These desperate attempts were failing me.
A couple posts back you can see another pair of boyfriend jeans that I own. They where indeed thrifted and maybe to the eye look decent, but they are no where near comfy. In fact they are the exact opposite of comfy, uncomfy is a more suitable term. So I finally broke down and bought my long wanted pants from Anthro. AND Let me tell you they fit like a dream!! They honestly were worth every penny (which was a lot of pennies). I would always always recommend Anthro for quality pants.
ALSO….I highly recommend this necklace and it is on sale. I can’t stop wearing this necklace!
One more also, I may or may not… have gotten asked how many months along I am… by a forty year old janitor… while wearing this peplum top….Good thing I have some thick skin…
Flowers, flowers, flowers, flowers. Who doesn’t love some live flower action in their homes? Plants and flowers are a must in my living spaces! They add a special kind of beauty and radiance. If the budget allowed, I would buy myself floral arrangements every week! But since the budget does NOT allow, for now I found a satisfying substitute—-this fab DIY flower garland. So easy, so cheap and so pleasing. Here is what I did…..
I bought some five dollar flowers from the grocery store and then picked the rest from my yard-wild flowers, blossoms, tulips, greenery, etc.
I bought these mini clothes pins at Walmart. I did a lot of searching for these clothes pins so save yourself the trouble and just go to Walmart. They are in the school and office supplies.
The easiest way to put together your garland is FIRST taping the string up where you want your garland to hang.
Then you can quickly and EASILY place your flowers and clothes pins on your string!
The blossoms die rather quickly so to keep my flower garland fresh and going for more than one day, I replaced my blossoms and other flowers when they started to look sad.
I made my garland for mothers day and it is still up enchanting my spaces. I am obsessed. This shall be a must at my one day in the future wedding!
Also if you have been wondering where I have been hiding? Work is consuming sixty hours of my time each week…….I hope this changes soon so I can keep my sanity!
This past month I have not been eating healthy and getting back on track to healthy living has been difficult. I mean I know for some people eating vegetables is second nature, but for the rest of us eating crap food is like second nature.
However, I am pleased to say that this week I have finally mastered my healthy eating again. And the difference in how I feel is tremendous. I have more energy, I feel happier, I can focus and concentrate better, I have less headaches and stomach aches, etc. I am no expert, but here are my tips on eating healthy and what I have been doing.
Eat as many fruits and veges as possible. They fill you up and make you feel and look great! I try to eat three servings of fruit and four servings of veges.
DON’T SKIP MEALS. This does more damage than good. Can even slow down your metabolism and we don’t want that!
I notice that when I am starving and trying to prepare dinner or lunch I will just grab whatever is in front of me to satisfy my hunger. And the food in front of me is usually crappier food. So to maintain self-control I eat half of a protein bar and then wait until I am finished preparing the meal.
Only eat sweets or desert after you have just finished a meal and preferably dinner. But hey I work and sometimes I need that desert at lunch time to get me up.
Eat miracle foods or “super foods”. Super foods that make me feel great are:
What are some of your health tips or favorite super foods?
